Today Bacon and I have an exciting announcement for you, duckfans: we’ve just released our fan-made rules for Heavy Gear Blitz! We previously posted about our feelings on the way the official rules were heading, and we decided around that time that we would go through the rules and make some of the changes we’d been advocating for ourselves. It ended up as a much bigger project than we anticipated, and we’ve now rewritten the entire manual and the unit lists.
Our list of model stats and costs will be online within the next few days as we have some formatting things to sort out. We’ll also be having them added to Gear Grinder (thanks to Samuli Aura for agreeing to that!) so people can use it to build forces.

In the future we want to provide some guidelines for extending this ruleset out to e.g. 15mm Sci Fi or other non Heavy Gear Blitz settings. We are personally going to use these rules for 6mm Warhammer 40k (Epic) games at some point.
Just wanted to show off some bits that arrived in the post today.
One order from Russian site Klukva Miniatures, which has really impressed me. I went with the Demon Warrior, Bloody Vampire, and Soul Vampire all in 35mm scale. You may recognise them from their respective games Kingdom Under Fire, Legacy of Kain, and Soul Reaver.
They came packed in a lovely little lasercut box and nicely padded with cotton wool. The detail on the miniatures is superb and they’ve gone through some seriously good QA too – virtually no mold lines or defects of any kind, which is rare for resin miniatures, especially of this level of detail.
Hi everyone. I recently decided to paint some more Heavy Gear models – it had been a while since I did any as a lot of my hobby time has been going on our fan rewrite of the Heavy Gear Blitz Living Rulebook (which is almost ready for release!). I realised I’d never actually painted any ordinary trooper Gears – the basic Hunter, Jager or Chasseur that are meant to be the staple of each Terra Novan force. So to rectify that, here’s a squad of NuCoal Chasseurs.
Just a quick post to share a couple of pictures of some concrete barricades/walls I’ve been working on to use in Heavy Gear Blitz. These are mainly for infantry to hunker behind, but they can also slow gears down a bit and add to the scenery in an urban or industrial map.
The barricades are from White Dragon Miniatures. For a low price you get good quality resin casts and 19 pieces, so definitely recommend these to anyone in the UK. They’re intended for 15mm but there’s nothing on them to indicate their scale so they can happily be used for 12mm, 10mm, or even 6mm. Very little work was needed to prep them, but I didn’t care about minor imperfections anyway. I added a little bit of battle damage myself with some drills and sculpting tools, gave them a quick prime and drybrushing, then quickly scrawled some graffiti on there. Doing neat or quality work is never really a focus for me when I’m doing scenery, because I feel as long as it gives the impression of urban walls at a glance it’s fine. I’d rather spend time working with the actual minis all things considered : ]
This weekend my esteemed Brother Duck came to visit. Many games were played and much fun was had. We hadn’t had a chance to hang out in person for a while and it was really nice to just chill and enjoy some gaming.
First my Duck Bro, his girlfriend, and I played the Warhammer Quest Card Game (by Fantasy Flight), which I’m generally very impressed with. It reminds me of Death Angel (also by FF) in that they’ve managed to capture the feel of a specific miniature game very well with just cards in different stacks. It’s quite similar to the LOTR co-op living card game (another FF product) but it’s easier to understand what’s happening and why.
Overall definitely a co-op game I’d recommend. It’s got a fair bit of depth and replayability and it’s pretty cheap too at about £20-£25. Sadly the addon packs are extremely rare and expensive, but it’s a game I could imagine making my own addons for.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a painting update, partly because I haven’t been painting much. A little while ago a cyclist crashed into me (entirely his fault) and I badly broke one finger. Sadly the finger will never work quite as well as before and has to be splinted for a couple of months, which has made many activities quite annoying for me. Happily it was on my off-hand and wasn’t the index finger.
It’s taken me a little while to get used to painting with that annoyance and to generally get back into the habit after a break (hahah).
But I’m very pleased to say I’ve finished painting a model which I started about two years ago and had made a resolution to finish this month; the Drake Gearstrider by Dream Pod 9 (available from Dream Pod 9 if you’re in the New World, or from Shiny Games by request if you’re in the EU).
In October, Dream Pod 9 announced a series of beta changes to the current ruleset for Heavy Gear Blitz. There’s been a bunch of discussion on it at the DP9 forums, and we wanted to collect our thoughts on it into a single place. Overall we’re not in favour of the majority of the changes, although there are some we think are a good idea. With a lot of the others we either feel that they make things more complicated or less interesting, or simply don’t understand the reasoning behind them. We go into (a lot!) more detail on each change below, though we’ve only discussed changes to the rules and traits themselves and not the individual models’ stats as this post was already long enough.
Even though a lot of the below is fairly critical, we’re writing it in a spirit of constructive criticism – we both love the game Heavy Gear Blitz and want its rules to continue to improve as much as possible.
